AIDS
is shrouded in secrecy and silence in many
communities. People do not talk about HIV.
They are afraid of AIDS and convince themselves
that HIV only affects particular groups in
society - that it only affects
other people.
And
because moral blame is placed on HIV positive
people, communities deny the existence of
HIV.
People
diagnosed with HIV invariably take on the
added burden of being judged and stigmatized.
They often choose to hide their status for
fear of negative repercussions. So they live
with a carefully-guarded secret. This hides
thre face of AIDS.
In
line with the GIPA (Greater Involvement of
People living with AIDS) principles, SWAK
initiated a project in July 2003 for PLWHAs
to make a difference in their communities
by going public. The overall objective of
the project is for the PLWHAs through public
disclosure share with the communities not
just the reality of living with HIV and AIDS,
but that it probably makes no difference whether
one is infected or affected when there is
undrestanding and support.
